Sign language

I know some of you have used it. I think we are going to do it. We've started a little bit but haven't been consistent. We need to work on that. Any thoughts or tips?

Also, did anyone send their kids to daycare while teaching sign language? I wonder if they would participate, too...

  1. Yes, consistency. Have you picked up at books? We used Signing Smart (http://www.amazon.com/Signing-Smart-Babies-Toddlers-Strategy/dp/0312337035). They advise choosing very few signs to start with and adding more in after some time has passed.

Leah was in daycare from 7-12 months and while they were not teaching her sign language as such, they knew what the signs looked like so that they could respond appropriately. Some daycares though are more than happy to work with your child. She chat with Tori's teachers and see what they say.

  2. Ditto everything Angelle said. :) Same book, ask teacher, etc. :) Well, Belle wasn't in daycare, but I agree with her opinion about it. The school that our kids go to teaches sign language as part of their every day learning and I imagine lots of daycares are doing that too (or would be interested in trying it) with how popular and useful it has become with babies. Most parents start with the same signs anyway.

Good luck. And just don't get discouraged. It may take a couple of months of doing it before she starts doing it back, but once she gets it, you'll be amazed at how fast she starts picking it up more and more.

  3. I picked a few signs that I thought would be the most helpful for the baby (milk, more, food) and just worked on those until they started signing back. Definitely don't get discouraged if she doesn't start signing back right away. I don't think either of my girls were consistently signing until they were a year old. Once they start though, its amazing how quickly they learn new signs.
